passion, love of line and color, humor, and life experiences.
Gigi's most recent works are filled with sensual color
and lineplay; seeming to be both microcosm and macrocosm
at the same time. Acrylics on canvas, they are direct
lines to her earliest memories of staring into a microscope
at her father's arm while at the same time being a
snapshot of her intimate contact with the paint at
the time she's painting them.
Her themes of personal, national, cultural, and social
identity arise silently from the paintings themselves.
They speak in the bright colored landscapes and in
the swirling organic lines. Social and personal identity
are found in the tight-knit families of related shapes
and the dense, populated areas they inhabit. As she
titles her work, she allows the work to talk to her
and to connect to the stories, memories, and places
of her childhood.
Together, these new paintings from this prolific artist
tell stories about time and place. They are welcome
additiosn to our own family histories.
